Harnessing Spontaneous Urban Development in Least Developed Countries

Canaan, Zone Nord of Port au Prince, Haiti

After the earthquake that stroke Haiti in 2010, Canaan, a barren area located in the outskirts of Metropolitan Port-au-Prince, has been developing informally and has become, in just six years, the fourth largest settlement in Haiti.

The Urban Development Initiative supports relevant Government of Haiti institutions to establish sustainable urban planning and management mechanisms in order to better harness the development potential of this emerging city.
